Alliant Says Smart Meters are Not the Cause of Higher Bills
I don't know about you, but I absolutely dread getting my electric bill during the summer months. I live on a top floor apartment, and heat rises, so I have my air cranked alllll the time. My bills are typically double, sometimes almost triple the usual amount! A lot of Alliant customers have been receiving higher bills this summer, and some of them are blaming the newly installed smart meters. Alliant says that's not the case.
If you've been receiving higher-than-usual electric bills, Alliant Energy says that their new smart meters are not to blame, "because they're not activated to act as smart meters yet." According to CBS2, a spokesperson for Alliant stated:
"Right now the meters that people have on the back of their house are operating just like the meter they used to have on the back of their house."
Essentially, a smart meter is just a meter with a radio attached so that Alliant can read it from a remote location. The likely reason you're experiencing higher bills? Hotter temperatures are causing your air conditioner to work harder. If you don't believe that's the problem, the company is encouraging customers to reach out to better understand their bill. The customer service number is 1-800-255-4268.
