Apparently, I'm old.  It's official.  Not because I turned 40, or because my hair is gone, but because I put two spaces after a period.  I just did it again!

A career expert says that when updating your resume and cover letter you may not want to double space after a period.  Why?  Because that signifies that you learned to type on a typewriter, and thus makes you old.  Generations that have learned to type on computers and those who text constantly know that only one space is needed.  Yes, businesses aren't supposed to discriminate based on age, but if you don't want to appear ancient, don't double space!

The real reason we no longer need to double space between sentences is because computers (and phones, tablets, etc..) don't have monospaced type. That means that each letter, number, and symbol you type receives the appropriate amount of spacing based off how large the character is. With typewriters, each character received the same amount of space so people were taught to double space to make it easier to differentiate between sentences. You can read more about it in this article from Slate.com

So, here it is. My first sentence without the double space. Wow...I feel so much younger.
