Cedar Rapids is home to both Quaker Oats and General Mills production plants, and today we should celebrate that fact more than any other. Why? Today is National Cereal Day.

According to BakeryandSnacks.com, General Mills makes two of the four most popular cereals, including Cheerios which the company sold more than $339 million of last year. As this video shows us, they're made right here in the City of Five Seasons:

Tops on the list last year was another General Mills product, Honey Nut Cheerios. More than a half-billion dollars worth of those heavenly circles were sold last year.

No way am I forgetting Quaker Oats. The Cedar Rapids plant is the largest cereal plant in the world. It's been a Cedar Rapids staple since 1873 and according to QuakerOats.com, the free "trial size" originated right here. In 1890, an all Quaker Oats train went from Cedar Rapids to the west coast. The train was packed with trial-size half-ounce samples of Quaker Oats that were delivered to every mailbox in Portland, Oregon. Yes, Cedar Rapids and Quaker Oats go back a long way... even longer than this vintage commercial:

According to NationalCerealDay.com, 49% of Americans start their day with a bowl of cereal every day. THAT continues to be very good news for Cedar Rapids.
