Happy Cinco de Mayo! No, the day does NOT mark independence day for Mexico. That holiday is September 16th. Today is an important day in the country's history, however. On May 5th, 1862 the Mexican army, outnumbered 2-1, defeated a French Army at The Battle of Puebla. It was an important victory for Mexico and the victory is celebrated to this day. However, Cinco de Mayo is not even a national holiday in Mexico, although public schools are closed through- out the country today.

America began recognizing the holiday in the 1870s in California, as an opposition to French forces still located in Mexico. The holiday continued to gain steam to the point to where it is today. Various businesses feature Mexican foods, drinks and other items. Eastern Iowa is home to some great Mexican restaurants. I have a personal favorite in Marion, Villas Patio. Take a moment and celebrate a little bit of Mexico today, and understand the true meaning behind the holiday!
