The average person experiences a so called mid-life crisis at the age of 42. How do you know that you're going through your mid-life crisis? It has a lot to do with the music you listen to. A new study by the music streaming service Spotify found that the music we listen to follows a fairly specific pattern. In our 20's we listen to stuff that's popular. Our taste in music begins to evolve in our late 20's and early 30's. By our mid to late 30's we listen to what we like and not whats 'trendy'. But, by the age of 42...we're back to what's popular. Why? Because if you're going through a mid-life crisis, you're grasping for things that make you feel young again. Listening to music that younger people listen to is one way of doing that.

I'm 40 years old and I have to admit, I listen to a fair amount of pop music on my own. Do I do it to feel younger? I'm not going to tell you that isn't one of the reasons. But I also do it to stay connected with my kids. My daughters love music and I want to know what they're listening to, and be able to share in the joy that they have for music. When I go out and buy a red sports car, then the mid-life crisis is on.
