Animator Ron Campbell who worked in the comic strip, movie, and cartoon world for more than 50 years is in Iowa City this week bringing back childhood memories with his incredible works.

Campbell is appearing again Thursday from noon to 8 at the Iowa Artisans Gallery at 207 East Washington Street in Iowa City. Julie and I stopped by earlier this evening and were blown away not only by his works on display and for sale, but also his ability to quickly paint the characters onto a simple piece of paper while we all looked on. We watched him paint Rosie the Robot from "The Jetsons" and Pebbles from "The Flintstones" in no time at all. And they looked fabulous.

Just LOOK at the list of shows, comics, and movies he worked on during 50-plus years as an animator, many of them with the famous Hanna-Barbera: Popeye and Olive Show, Beetle Bailey, The Beatles (TV Cartoons and Yellow Submarine), Sesame Street, George of the Jungle, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo Where Are You?, Harlem Globetrotters, Flinstones, Jetsons, Smurfs, Heathcliff, Pac-Man, Ghostbusters, Stuart Little, Winnie the Pooh, Duck Tales, and Rugrats... and that's NOT all of them.

Campbell was just a regular guy, albeit incredibly talented. And though nearing his 76th birthday, he certainly hasn't lost his touch with a paint brush. Thanks, Ron... seeing those characters on canvas brought back to life many of my favorite shows as a kid, even though I haven't seen most of them for more years than I care to count.
