Jake Owen and now-ex-wife Lacey Buchanan are one of three country couples who split up during the summer of 2015, and in the year since, the singer has kept the details of their divorce private. In fact, Owen admits that he passed on recording a song for his upcoming album, American Love, because he felt that it might be taken a little too personally.

In an interview with Taste of Country, Owen says that he had the opportunity to record “She’s Got a Way With Words,” a song recently released by fellow recent divorcé Blake Shelton, and turned down the track.

“That was pitched to me, and I remember vividly the first time I heard that, I was like, ‘That’s a really good, cool song, very well written,'” Owen recalls. “'But if I record this song and I’m taken literally — I don’t want my ex to perceive I did that to her.'”

Owen and Buchanan announced their divorce in August of 2015, just weeks after Owen released the music video for his song “Real Life,” originally planned as the first single from American Love. And, as country fans know, Shelton, who included “She’s Got a Way With Words” on his latest album, If I’m Honestsplit from now-ex-wife Miranda Lambert in July of 2015. Andy Albert, Marc Beeson and Wyatt Earp penned "She's Got a Way With Words," but its lyrics -- “She put the her in hurt / She put the why in try / She put the S.O.B. in sober / She put the hang in hangover / She put the ex in sex / She put the low in blow / She put a big F.U. in my future / Yeah, she’s got a way / She’s got a way with words" -- got listeners speculating about Shelton's motives nonetheless.

Owen's American Love is set for release on Friday (July 29). The project is available for pre-order on iTunes.
