You may have more candy left after tonight's trick-or-treating is complete than you have in recent years. It's going to be a historically cold Halloween.

The average high temperature in Cedar Rapids on October 31, Halloween, is 54 degrees. We won't get close to that today. If the KCRG-TV 9 forecast high is correct, it will be one of the coldest days the city has ever seen on this date. Obviously, by the time trick-or-treating ends, it will be much colder.

Although October will go down in the record books as an unusually warm month, the weather turned a few days ago and the mercury won't start going back up until Wednesday. That spells a dreadfully cold night for all the ghosts and goblins.

KCRG forecasts a high temperature of just 38 in Cedar Rapids today with a low temperature tonight of 19. If the daytime high does reach just 38, it will be the 6th coldest temperature on Halloween in Cedar Rapids history. Or at least as long as they've been keeping records. Throw in winds that could exceed 40 mph at times, and it's going to be a rough day.

Below are the Top 10 coldest Halloweens (October 31) in Cedar Rapids history, including ties.

Thanks to KCRG meteorologist Corey Thompson for compiling this list for me.

  • 40 degrees in 1925, 1951, 1954, 1993, and 2006
  • 39 in 1905
  • 37 in 1930, 2002, and 2017
  • 35 in 1913
  • 34 in 1996
  • 31 in 2019
  • 29 in 1917

Regardless of how cold it is tonight, you'll want to try to add a layer under your kids' costumes. High temperatures are expected to rebound into the low to mid-40s on Wednesday and will be back in the 50s for the upcoming weekend.

Sunday at 2 a.m. is when we re-enter standard time for the coming months. On the bright side, at least we get an additional hour of sleep.
