Back to school time is full of expenses. New clothes, new shoes, and of course, school supplies. And when you have more than one child, the price tag can go high quick! The school districts give you a detailed list of supplies that each student will need for the year, and then it's up to you to find them all. Get ready for the 'School Supply Scavenger Hunt'!

I have to give my wife Holly complete props as she is the one that gathers this growing list each year. It wouldn't be so bad if you could get everything in one store. But that's virtually impossible. Unless you're among the first in a store after they put out their back to school display, selections get picked over. Items run out and you have to head to the next store to complete your list.

Pictured above is a partial pile of school supplies for our 6th, 2nd, and 1st-grade students. That doesn't include new backpacks for all three kids which can run between $20 and $40 dollars. We probably spent around $250 on school supplies this year.

If you wonder why parents celebrate when their kids go back to school, it's not just because they're finally out of the house. It's that we're finally done spending money! At least for awhile anyway.
