The "50 Shades of Grey" movie came out Valentine's Day weekend and the movie reviews are pouring out all over the internet. Some people have loved it, others have totally hated it. I'll say that I was a little embarrassed to admit that I wanted to see it, but I read the books a few years ago, so I kind of felt obligated to check it out. I do have to admit that it wasn't completely terrible, which kind of shocked me. Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • They really toned it down. Like, a lot. If you went into the movie not having read the books, you'd probably be shocked by that statement, but believe me, it's true. It could have been so much worse. They really focused more on the romantic aspect of the novel than the details of their sexual relationship, which was a bit unexpected. That being said, there still was some STRONG sexual content. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't rated NC-17.
  • The actors were very good. When the movie was first cast, I was hesitant about the choices, but it actually turned out well. In the novels, I didn't like Anastasia. She drove me absolutely nuts. But in the movie, I kind of liked her character. She is much sassier and occasionally made me laugh out loud. Don't even get me started on Christian Grey -- Jamie Dornan totally looked the part. I have no complaints. I think everyone in the theater gasped the first time he took his shirt off. Heck yes.
  • There was a lot of "female frontal nudity," and I think it must have been pretty cold on the set, if you get what I'm saying. I've never seen anything like it. I won't go into too much detail, because I don't want to be super inappropriate, but just be on the look-out for sharp objects.
  • The movie ending was as close as you can get to the book ending. It ends on a cliff-hanger, which means the next movie will DEFINITELY be happening. I like that they followed the book closely in that regard. They didn't stick us with a fake happy ending.

Overall, the movie was entertaining. It was very cheesy, but it kept me interested. I did realize that I am too immature for these types of movies, though. There was a lot of giggling.
