Bob Brooks, who spent 23 years as KHAK's Sports Director during his 70-plus-year broadcasting career, passed away June 25. He will be honored just over a month later.

Veteran's Memorial Stadium, 950 Rockford Road SW in Cedar Rapids, will play host to a celebration of Bob Brooks' life and career Wednesday, July 27 beginning at 5 p.m. The program begins at 5:45. There is a lot to celebrate. Last Friday morning, a man asked me if I knew Bob Brooks. When I told him I did, he said, "Bob Brooks did more for high school sports in Cedar Rapids than anyone else ever has. He was a great, great man." Obviously, Bob was involved with a lot more than high school sports. He's best known for his more than half-century involvement with Iowa Hawkeye sports and decades in support of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. He was also one of the nicest men you'd ever want to me. Yes, there will be a lot to celebrate.

Brooks worked at KHAK from 1977 to 2000. Prior to that, he worked for both KCRG radio and TV (1949-1976). The last year's of his incredible career were spent at KMRY radio (2000-2016).

Five years ago, the press box at Kingston Stadium was named the "Bob Brooks Press Box." There has been talk of renaming the entire stadium in his honor. It would be a fitting tribute.

I'll be at Kingston Stadium July 27 to honor Bob. I wouldn't think of missing it.

You can donate to the Bob Brooks Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank, in lieu of flowers.
