If you have kids and you were watching the big game earlier this month, you might've turned on Super Bowl LVIII on Nickelodeon.

The children's channel broadcasted the game with Dora the Explorer as the rules expert, Sandy Cheeks acting as a field reporter, and Spongebob and Patrick providing color commentary from Bikini Bottom.

And Spongebob even reunited the Bikini Bottom Band for a performance of 'Sweet Victory" before the game!

The real voice actors for Spongebob and Patrick donned motion capture gear so they can provide live commentary alongside play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle and analyst Nate Burleson.

These two acted as guides for the cartoon characters and the kids watching at home.

At one point the human commentators brought up the Hawkeyes during the broadcast.

Why Were These Commentators Even Mentioning Iowa?

Well, there were quite a few Iowa connections at the Super Bowl earlier this month. The San Francisco 49ers had two key players from the Hawkeye State.

The team's tight end George Kittle played for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2012 to 2016. And the 49ers'  quarterback Brock Purdy played for the ISU Cyclones between 2018 and 2021.

Eagle asked the two fishy fictional characters;

"Spongebob, Patrick; have you guys ever heard of a place called Iowa?"

The dynamic duo starting oohing and ahhing at the mention of the Hawkeye State.

Spongebob chimes in with, "Iowa? It sounds exotic!"

Eagle goes onto say, " Well, in Iowa, they like to say punting is winning!"

This is a reference to the Iowa Hawkeyes football team and their punter Tory Taylor. He is widely considered one of the best punters in college football.

Taylor has broken the school records for both punt total and yardage at the University of Iowa.
