A Small Issue at Movie Theaters Is Becoming a Major Problem

Going to the movies in 2016 can be a frustrating situation. People texting on their phones. Exorbitant ticket prices. People talking on their phones. Sound that’s either way too loud or way too soft. People taking pictures of the screen with their phones and then posting them to Facebook in the middle of the movie. For a lot of these problems, there’s no easy solution. An experience designed to take us away from our everyday troubles is now fraught with them.

More Movies to Watch in September 2016: On Demand With ScreenCrush

We’ve got one of the biggest movies of the summer (or any summer!), with superheroes doing battle with each other instead of the bad guys, the sequel to one of the most popular comedies of the last decade, and Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes in a steamy film about love and betrayal amongst a rock star and her friends.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ Review: I Guess ‘The Okay Seven,’ While Accurate, Wouldn’t Sell Tickets

Awards season may be underway with the official start of the Toronto Film Festival, but the fall of 2016 picks up right where summer left off with Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Magnificent Seven,’ a loud and frenetic update of an old classic very few people were clamoring for. The question with any remake is why; why a new version and why one now? The movie just made its world premiere as the opening night film of TIFF 2016, and I still don’t have a satisfying answer to that question.

‘Sully’ Review: Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Take on American Heroism

Even by the standards of a biopic about an incredibly famous man at the center of an incredibly famous real-life event there isn’t a ton of suspense in Sully. Everyone who was alive and conscious on January 15, 2009 remembers what happened that day, when Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after the plane was struck by birds during takeoff.(I certainly do; I’d just arrived at my condo for the Sundance Film Festival and watched the rescue efforts unfold on live television.)

2016 Was the Worst Summer for Big Movies in 15 Years – But That’s Not the Whole Story

About two months ago, on a day when I was in no way questioning my career path and life choices, I asked a question: “Is 2016 the worst summer movie season ever?” In early July, it was probably a little premature to raise that issue, but with theaters were filled with dreck like Independence Day: Resurgence, The Legend of Tarzan, and Alice Through the Looking Glass, it was hard not to wonder. At that time, I looked at the Rotten Tomatoes ratings from hundreds of wide releases from the last decade, and found that while the overall scores from 2016 were basically in line with those from ones from each of the last five years, the scores for just the biggest movies, the ones like Tarzan or Independence Day with budgets in excess of $100 million, were way lower this year.

Federal Judge Orders ‘Making a Murderer’ Subject Released From Prison

Netflix has already announced a second season of Making a Murderer, their surprise hit true-crime series that captured the nation’s imagination last winter. If that’s true, their show just got a huge real-life plot twist.
