The longtime home of Hardee's, a Cedar Rapids location will soon be home to a new establishment.

Hardee's was in the building (above) at the corner of 1st Avenue and 32nd Street in northeast Cedar Rapids for decades. Longtime Cedar Rapids residents will remember it was a place called Sandy's back in the 1960s and early 1970s. That was before Hardee's and Sandy's merged, changing nearly all locations into Hardee's restaurants.

About 60 years later, there are now just two Hardee's locations in Cedar Rapids. They're on Blairs Ferry Road N.E. and 29th Ave. S.W.

In late summer of 2021, the Hardee's closed on the northwest corner of 1st Avenue and 32nd St. NE, and the building has sat vacant ever since. A new company will soon breathe new life into that spot.

According to GLD Commercial, Starbucks will be moving into the location where more than 19,000 vehicles travel each day. Amanda LaGrange, Marketing & Research Manager for GLD Commercial, tells me that weather permitting, site work will begin early in 2024.

Adam Gibbs, SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors), of GLD Commercial represented the landlord of the 1st Avenue/32nd St. NE location. Below is a rendering, provided by GLD Commercial.
