Why Uber May No Longer Operate In Iowa

A bill being considered by Iowa lawmakers has Uber threatening to pull it's service from the state altogether. The bill in the Iowa Senate would create statewide regulations for companies like Uber, which is currently governed by city regulations where they operate.

Uber says their main concern is the part of the bill that mandates comprehensive and collision insurance coverage for drivers using cars with liens. A similar law was passed in Kansas and Uber pulled out of the state immediately. Lawmakers in that state repealed the provision and Uber eventually returned.

Lawmakers say that the provision in the bill was introduced to protect bankers who want to protect their investment in car loans. But Uber executives call the law "unworkable". Uber currently operates in Cedar Rapids, Ames, Des Moines and the Quad Cities. The company has served over 100,000 Iowans since they began operating in the state.
