Why Men Should Get Tested For Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we urge everyone to get tested. That's right, everyone.
The American Cancer Society estimates about 2,670 new cases of invasive male breast cancer will be diagnosed in the USA in 2019, and about 500 men will die from the disease.
What should you look for if you're concerned about breast cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, the signs include:
- A lump or swelling, which is often (but not always) painless
- Skin dimpling or puckering
- Nipple retraction (turning inward)
- Redness or scaling of the nipple or breast skin
- Discharge from the nipple
Since routine breast cancer exams don't usually happen for men, it's important to speak with your doctor about it specifically if you're concerned. Knowing and discussing the above signs with them is an important step in early detection.
The Especially For You Race, held last weekend in NewBo, saw over 14,000 participants, more than 700 were breast cancer survivors who ran or walked to raise awareness of the need for early detection.
