Student Stabbed at Vinton-Shellsburg High School
A stabbing at Vinton-Shellsburg High School in Vinton has left a student hospitalized.
According to the Vinton Police Department, officers were called to the high school a few minutes after 7:30 p.m. Monday night. When they arrived, officers found a male student helping another male student outside the school.
Witnesses at the scene told Vinton police officers that two males, 15 and 16 years old, got into an argument in the commons area of the high school, which is located on West 21st Street in Vinton. The 16-year-old male then reportedly stabbed the 15-year-old male with a knife. The two were part of an evening driver's education class at the school.
The Vinton Police Department says the 16-year-old was charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. The charge is a Class C felony, punishable with up to 10 years in prison and a fine of at least $1,000, but no more than $10,000. The teen was taken to the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora.
The 15-year-old stabbing victim was taken to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. The Vinton Police Department reports that he is in stable condition this morning.
