An Urbana woman will always remember her getaway to the family’s cabin along the Mississippi River last weekend. She returned home $1 million richer.

Karen Kramer was the Mega Millions player who bought the ticket in Harpers Ferry that matched five of the six numbers in Tuesday night’s drawing. The winning numbers were: 9-22-39-41-54. The Mega Ball was 19 and the Megaplier was 3.

Kramer's ticket, along with another sold in West Virginia, were the only two in the country that won a $1 million prize that night. Kramer claimed her winnings at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive on Thursday.

The 60-year-old, who works as a para-educator for the Center Point-Urbana School District, said she initially saw a “1” and some zeroes when she checked her ticket, but didn’t realize just how many zeroes were involved at first. Then it hit her.

Kramer said she sent a text about the win to her husband, Brad, who was worried at first because he only saw the first sentence: “Lightning struck us.” Then, Brad read the rest of her message: “On Mega Millions, I won $1 million! But please don’t tell anybody yet.”

The couple kept Karen’s big win a secret from everyone -- including their three adult children -- until after she claimed the prize.

The couple plans to invest the bulk of the winnings for retirement and pay some bills. Karen also wants to get a dog.

Kramer purchased the winning ticket at Barry’s Mini Mart in Harpers Ferry, which will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Iowa lottery for selling the ticket.

The estimated jackpot for Tuesday's drawing was $56 million. According to lottery officials, one winning ticket for the BIG prize was sold in Illinois.
