Fans of the famous Jones County Hula Hoop tree can breathe a bit easier. The Jones County Board of Supervisors is going to implement changes to make the area around the tree safer. So, yes. The tree is staying.

The tree, which is covered in hula hoops, is located on county road E23 just outside of Amber. During the last few weeks, the board of supervisors has been discussing safety concerns surrounding the tree. Yesterday, County Engineer Derek Snead presented information from a recent study on the road near the tree. The board then unanimously voted to lower the speed limit near the tree from 55 miles per hour down to 35 miles per hour.

The speed limit change will happen within the next 14 days. New signs are in the process of being made. Board members and the county engineer say the reduced speeds should help, but they still need everyone visiting the tree to be safe and cautious when exiting their vehicles.
