This Year’s RAGBRAI Route Will Be the Hilliest in History

The 2024 RAGBRAI route has officially been revealed!

On Saturday night, more than 1,000 cyclists from Iowa and beyond gathered at the Iowa Events Center for the announcement of the 2024 route for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. The 51st annual RAGBRAI will take place July 20th through 27th and, according to the official website, it will be the "eighth shortest route but hilliest ever RAGBRAI."

The 2024 RAGBRAI Route will run through Southern Iowa, kicking off in the city of Glenwood. Overnight stops include Red Oak, Atlantic, Winterset, Knoxville, Ottumwa, and Mount Pleasant, with the ride officially ending in Burlington. The route is a total of 434 miles long, with 18,737 feet of climb! The Des Moines Register reports that "Sunday, Monday and Saturday will each cover 45 or fewer miles, and Thursday will be 60 miles, a mere jaunt by RAGBRAI standards. But Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday will range from 74 to 82 miles, with at least 3,000 feet of climb each day." The route wasn't initially so hilly, but adjustments had to be made for construction and other issues. The good news is that the higher elevation will offer some stunning views!

The full RAGBRAI route and other 2024 details will be announced in April, which is a few weeks later than usual. The Des Moines Register notes that "because the route and roads the ride will travel are still being finalized, some of the projected distances and amount of climb each day will likely change before the turn-by-turn directions are complete."
