Blue Bunny isn't the only Iowa-based company that sells tasty ice cream treats! If you're not familiar with Thelma's Treats out of Des Moines, let us introduce you!

Who is "Thelma?"

According to the company's official website, Thelma's got its name from founder Dereck Lewis' great-grandma. Thelma was born in 1904 and grew up on a farm near Monroe, Iowa. She loved to play the piano and bake, and was "famous" for her delicious snickerdoodle cookies. Although Thelma died in 2013 at the ripe old age of 108, her recipe lives on through her grandson's company.

When Was Thelma's Treats Founded?

Thelma's got its start shortly before Thelma passed away. Founder Dereck Lewis writes:

"In 2012, my mom and I started making ice cream sandwiches with my Great Grandma Thelma’s snickerdoodle cookie recipe. We sold them from a little pushcart at our local farmers market in Des Moines, Iowa and our customers couldn’t get enough! Now we’re delighted to share Thelma’s cheeky spirit and delicious treats with customers across the country. Each sweet treat is still made by hand in our own kitchen, and we just know you’ll taste the love in every bite."

What Kind of Treats Do They Sell?

As mentioned above, Thelma's specializes in ice cream cookie sandwiches. They come in individual packages, as well as four-packs. Flavors include the classic Snickerdoodle, Chocolate Chip, Mint Double Chocolate, S'mores, Monster, Caramel Coffee, Strawberry Sugar, and Butter Pecan.

Where Can I Find Thelma's Ice Cream Sandwiches?

Thelma's Treats are sold at around 6,000 retailers, including Hy-Vee locations here in Iowa. And, according to a new article from the Des Moines Register, they are now sold at select Costco stores in packages of 10! The article says they "are on the shelves of more than 100 Costco stores across 10 states," including Iowa, and will remain there throughout the summer. You can also find the Thelma's ice cream truck/stand at special events, especially during the summer months. Check out all the stores that stock Thelma's Ice Cream Sandwiches HERE.
