Open roads are everywhere, and you never know when your foot might get a little heavy—really heavy. Next thing you know, you’re cruising at 120. It happens! If there’s no one around to witness it, maybe it didn’t even happen, right? Those traffic cameras really need to keep quiet. The trouble starts when you’re zooming by a cop; suddenly, a casual 128.4 mph isn’t just a thrill—it’s a ticket. And come on, isn’t that just a few miles over?

What does speed cost in Wisconsin?

In Wisconsin, if you're thinking about putting the hammer down, be prepared for a hefty price tag. Over in Iowa, you’ll just get a fine with no points on your record. But in Wisconsin, it’s a double whammy: you not only face points on your license, but also a fine that can range from $200 to $800, depending on how severe the violation is according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal. Just something to keep in mind!

If you're convicted of a speeding offense in Wisconsin it remains on your record for 5 years and most convictions are eligible to be removed from a driving record at that time.

How Do Points Work in Wisconsin?

As for points, in Wisconsin, says the DOT, the number of points a driver receives for speeding depends on how much over the speed limit they were going.

  • 1-9 mph over the limit: 3 Points
  • 11-19 mph over the limit: 4 Points
  • 20 mph over the limit: 6 points.

If you're going 25 over or more that's a major traffic offense and will result in automatic license suspension.

The Fastest Ever in the Great State of Wisconsin

If I’d written this a few months ago, we might not have had an award-winning speeder in Wisconsin! While the state does hand out plenty of speeding tickets for going over 100, that ridiculously fast ticket had somehow eluded them—until now.

In August 2024, the Wisconsin State Patrol clocked a motorcycle going a staggering 175.7 MPH. I’d say that’s definitely in the major league of speeding! The rider didn’t help their case by weaving in and out of traffic on Interstates 39 and 90, either. Talk about attracting attention!

One Glaring Error in the Story

As I read about this speedster, I noticed a mistake in many stories. They referred to the pursuing Wisconsin State Patrol vehicle as a helicopter. But if you look at the picture below, there’s a cross member you can see out the window, which suggests something else. Nowhere in the Wisconsin State Patrol’s statement does it specify a plane or helicopter—they just called it “aerial enforcement.”

I don't know of any helicopter that has cross members in the way of whirling blades.  I also remember my state trooper friend, a flight paramedic for the Maryland State Police said once that the helicopters do assist in catching speeders.  They have the unique ability to land and apprehend a suspect if needed, and they can clock speeding vehicles but for the most part that's a fixed-wing issue.

Be safe out there.
