The Biggest Skate Park in the U.S. is Being Built in Iowa
Move over, Texas! Iowa is about to become a prime location for skaters! A new article from The Des Moines Register has revealed that Lauridsen Skatepark is going to be the biggest skate park in all of America.
Lauridsen Skatepark will be located in Des Moines right along the Des Moines River, northeast of Wells Fargo Arena. The new park was originally going to have 65,000 square feet of skate-able surface, but that number has been bumped up to 88,000 square feet, beating out Spring Skatepark in Houston as the biggest skate park in the U.S.
So how much is this park going to cost? The answer is $3.5 million, plus $2 million in additional amenities that will be added in 2020. The money was raised through private donations, although the people behind the project do plan to apply for a Community Attraction and Tourism Grant to help with those extra amenities. The Des Moines Register states that, "supporters predict the skate park will attract 40,000 skaters per year and have the capacity to host local and national skating events."
The best news of all is that you won't have to wait too long for the park to open! They expect construction to begin this week, with a grand opening taking place this fall.
