Halloween costume trends differ from year to year, and, according to Pinterest, this year sees two very interesting trends that are rising in popularity.

Anyone who uses Pinterest can tell you that do-it-yourself costumes are HUGE right now. I have actually put my own costumes together for the past several years, rather than just purchase sets from Party City. Aside from saving you money, it also helps you be more unique. If you put a costume together yourself, the chances of running into someone else with your EXACT costume are non-existent.

Pinterest has revealed that there are over 5 million costume pins this year alone, and many of those pins are for group costumes. A survey by The National Retail Federation says that 8 out of 10 millennials are planning a group costume this year. This could be anything from the cast of a TV show to food to music groups. In the past few years I've seen a Mario Kart group costume, Disney Princesses, the cast of The Walking Dead, and Taco Bell Sauce Packets.

The other big trend for Halloween this year seems to be throwback costumes. The 90s are especially popular. In fact, Pinterest says that 90s costumes are 5 times more popular than they were last year! Some of the best ones I've seen are The Spice Girls, characters from old Nickelodeon shows like Rugrats or Hey Arnold, Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, and characters from movies like Clueless.

Whatever you choose to do, own it! Here are some of my DIY costumes from the past few years:
