The American Red Cross Honors an Eastern Iowa Man [WATCH]
A local man has been officially recognized as a hero!
The 17th annual Heroes of the Heartland breakfast took place yesterday in Des Moines, which is a yearly event put on by the Iowa Region of the American Red Cross. The breakfast was centered around four amazing heroes from right here in our state! The website reads:
"These outstanding individuals have demonstrated courage, compassion, and unselfish character, performing extraordinary acts of heroism in the eyes of their neighbors and community."
One of those outstanding individuals is Jake Siggins of Lisbon, who stopped on I-380 to rescue a total stranger by the name of Cody Holmes. Here's his story:
"Jake, a truck driver, was in the right place and the right time when he was driving on Interstate 380 when Cody Holmes lost control of his car, rolled six times and was ejected from his car. Jake immediately pulled over his truck, ran towards Cody who was not breathing and started CPR until paramedics arrived. Although Cody has a long road to recovery, Jake is credited for saving his life. The two have been very close ever since the accident."
The other honorees include Cass Weitl of Templeton, Nate Thayer of Martensdale, and Patrick Palmersheim of West Des Moines. Congratulations to all four of the winning Iowans! We are very lucky to have people like them in our community! You can read all about their heroic acts HERE.
