Prop 12 has been a big topic in the pork industry for a while now and with the new year, producers were preparing to see some big changes. Steve Meyer an Economist with Partners for Production Agriculture spoke to pork producers at the Iowa Pork Congress about the latest update on the law.
Kevin Rasmussen is the new president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Rasmussen is a pig farmer, finishing 8,000 head of hog a year in Humboldt County.
Market access is important to producers. According to the NPPC, over 25 percent of pork production is exported to other markets. In 2020, the US pork industry exported $7.7 billion in pork and pork products to over 100 countries.
According to Law Street Media, grocers such as Hy-Vee, Kroger, Albertsons, and U.S. Foods are accusing pork processors of conspiring prices of meat sold to them between 2009 and 2018.
