Special Enrollment Period Underway for Affordable Care Act

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has had many adverse effects on our lives. Jobs and businesses have been lost, not to mention the loss of human life. For many who lost their job during these tough times, it also means the loss of your health insurance. For millions of people who are uninsured, coverage through the Affordable Care Act became available as of Monday.

The new enrollment period lasts through May 15th. But some are afraid that not enough people know about it. His Hands Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids serves the underinsured and uninsured in Linn County. KCRG reports that the organization hasn't seen recent job losses in the county show up in more people signing up for the coverage. Officials say that is very bothersome, and they want to get the word out that if you need insurance, there is some available.

Staff at His Hands believe that lack of awareness is one of the biggest issues. KCRG reports that through a grant, the clinic is working with a marketing class at Mt. Mercy University to create posters and newspaper ads promoting the fact that you can sign up for health insurance through May 15th.

Who is eligible for the insurance? Anyone who lives in the U.S. and is a legal citizen or has eligible immigration status can get the insurance through the Marketplace. People who aren't offered employer insurance, and make less than 400% of the federal poverty level, qualify for tax credits which would cover premium costs, so they would pay less money.
