Iowan Nets World Record Fish in Local Park

Jakob Mackey-Frazier wants people to know that Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City is a great place to fish. His world record fish should help drive that point home! The Des Moines Register reports that Mackey-Frazier pulled on his silicone waders back on August 10, 2025 and reeled in a giant grass carp. How big? The Register reports that it tipped the scales at 71 pounds 8 ounces! Imagine the fight and effort it took to land that fish. But that was only the first fight Mackey-Frazier was in for.

Iowa Fish Recognized as a World Record

The Register reports that Mackey-Frazier then began the long process of having his fish recognized as a world record setter. He did this to prove that Iowa is full of great places to fish, like Bacon Creek Park. Finally, in March 2026, the International Game Fish Association issued the official certificate. Mackey-Frazier had his world record!

Mackey-Frazier shattered the old world record! His huge carp that weighed over 71 pounds suprpassed the previous record of 55 pounds and 1 ounce. The Register reports that fish was caught in Japan in 2019. And Mackey-Frazier landed his fish using only 30 pound weighted line.

The Register reports that Mackey-Frazier first got in to fishing after his dad starting taking him to Bacon Creek Park. Now, as he continues to carry on the family tradition, he can call himself a world record holder too!
