In the month of September, there have been at least nine years in which snow has been recorded in Iowa, most recently in 1995. (A few flakes fell across Northern Iowa on September 22, 1995)

But on September 16, 1881, between 4-6" of snow fell in Western Iowa in Pottawattamie County.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, this is one of just two occasions where measurable snow has fallen in Iowa in the month of September. The other was on September 25, 1942 (4” in Mason city and Forest City).
