On July 1st, Iowans were able to officially buy raw milk. The bill was signed into law back in May by Governor Kim Reynolds, according to reports.

Now, producers will be permitted to sell unpasteurized milk, cheese, yogurts, and ice cream directly to customers.

The piece of legislation entitled Senate File 315 states that,

"...the production of raw milk at certain dairies, the manufacture of products using raw milk, and the labeling and distribution of raw milk and manufactured products, and making penalties applicable."

Iowans will only be able to purchase raw milk directly from a raw milk dairy, so you won't be able to find this product on the shelves at Hy-Vee anytime soon.

There are some limitations to just who can distribute raw milk. According to the new law, these raw milk dairies must have their cows get annual checkups. The milk produced must have its bacteria count checked monthly.

Reports do also say that it is illegal to resell raw milk here in the Hawkeye State. This piece of legislation will now bring down the number of states that have prohibited the sale of raw milk down to eighteen.

There are twelve states in the country that allow for unpasteurized milk to be sold in retail stores this includes: Alaska, California, Utah, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Washington, Idaho, New Mexico, South Carolina, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire.

Twenty-eight states permit farm-to-consumer sales of raw milk.

Officials do warn consumers of some possible health concerns of drinking unpasteurized milk. According to the CDC, there is a high risk of foodborne illnesses when unpasteurized milk is consumed.

The New York Times reports that it can specifically cause salmonella, listeria, campylobacter and E. coli.

This report goes on to say that states where raw milk was legally sold had approximately three times more outbreaks than areas where it's illegal.

According to reports, there are some benefits to consuming raw milk. It apparently contains more amino acids, antimicrobials, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids than the pasteurized alternative.

In addition, some even claim that it's better for those with lactose intolerance, asthma, and other allergies.
