National Retailer Will Soon Open in Old Save-A-Lot Store

The Save-A-Lot grocery store located at 1625 J Street SW in Cedar Rapids, closed its doors in December of last year. Home Grown Iowa reports that owner Jim McVeigh spent 25 years keeping that store open. But now, he's preparing the building for its new tenant.

When the store closing was announced, McVeigh stated that he would try to find another grocery store to take its place. The Cedar Rapids Save-A-Lot was the last one located in Iowa. McVeigh had no luck. Instead, Home Grown Iowa reports that the new tenant that will be moving into the building will be Dollar Tree. While no official announcement has been made, Dollar Tree put signs up in store windows saying that they were hiring. Home Grown Iowa states that the new Dollar Tree location hopes to be open by June 1st and that they will be offering an expanded grocery section.

One business that will be happy when the new Dollar Tree opens is the Drop Inn Resale Store. Home Grown Iowa reports that the store has been in a portion of the Save-A-Lot building for the past 10 years. The nonprofit sells clothing and household items and stated that customer traffic has dropped off since the grocery store shut down, and they are eager for it to pick up again when Dollar Tree opens.
