Have You Visited This Hidden Gem Diner in Southeast Iowa?

Last weekend, our family spent some time in southeast Iowa. Our son has a summer internship in the Fairfield and Ottumwa area. We moved him into his apartment on Sunday, and afterwards we wanted to grab a bite to eat. There were plenty of options, but we opted for one a bit off the beaten path.

Southeast Iowa Diner Located Along the Des Moines River

After a quick Google search of area restaurants, we settled on the Riverside Family Restaurant. It sits just off Highway 63 near the Des Moines River in Ottumwa. This restaurant with an attatched gas station might not look like much, but as soon as we walked in, I knew we were in the right spot. First of all, the restaurant was busy, which is always a good sign. The interior felt like a step back in time. Handwritten signs. Old-fashioned chairs and booths. And then we ordered our food!

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Options

The menu was full of breakfast favorites, plus lunch specials, burgers, salads, and more! Our table ordered an omelet, biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict, and something called an Alaskan waffle. It featured fruit, pecans, and a scoop of ice cream in the middle! Everything was outstanding...and just look at this waffle!

These Aren't 2026 Prices

The food was great, the service was top-notch, and the best part? Our party of five enjoyed all that food, plus beverages, for just $54. Those certainly aren't prices adjusted for 2026!
