No One Allowed In After Pipe Bursts in Downtown Cedar Rapids Building
It's been an interesting morning, to say the least, at Plaza 425 in downtown Cedar Rapids. The building that houses KHAK had a water pipe burst between 7:30 and 8 this morning. I could hear the fire alarms sounding on other floors of the building and we soon heard a broken water pipe was the culprit. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and the water was shut off, but not before a huge mess had presented itself.
On the lobby and skywalk levels of the building, and inside the Prairie Soup Company on the skywalk, water covers the floor. You can see the damage inside Prairie Soup, where firefighters are standing in the photo above. In the pictures below, it's obvious it's not just water, but ice, on the building's skywalk level.
As of this writing (9 a.m.), Cedar Rapids Firefighters and building management are saying no one will be allowed in the building until at least 10 a.m., as cleanup continues. At 9 a.m. in Cedar Rapids, it remains 3 degrees below zero.
It was just over a year ago that Plaza 425 had a water pipe burst and cause major issues, also during extreme cold weather. Here's the link to the story and the amazing video from that day.
