Newton’s Paradise Cafe in Waterloo Closes ‘Until Further Notice’
A Downtown Waterloo favorite has temporarily shut down due to ongoing issues with equipment and staffing. As of Saturday (June 27th), Newton's Paradise Cafe at 128 E 4th St is closed "until further notice."

The Closure
This weekend, I took my monthly trip from Cedar Rapids to Cedar Falls to visit my best friend. As we've done every month so far this year, we made plans to visit a Cedar Valley restaurant that I've never been to before. Since it was a Sunday morning, our plan was to grab breakfast, and we had decided on a trip to Newton's Paradise Cafe in Downtown Waterloo. Unfortunately, those plans changed as soon as we pulled up to the restaurant.
We arrived at Newton's around 10:30 Sunday morning, only to discover that the restaurant was closed. The lights were off, the chairs were stacked on the tables, and a sign was posted on the door. After a quick search for the diner on Facebook, we learned that the restaurant is temporarily shut down as of June 27th. The announcement reads:
"Due to ongoing equipment and staffing issues we will be closed until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and support."
Equipment & Staffing Issues
In recent weeks, Newton's has been very open with customers about some of the problems the restaurant has been dealing with. They announced in late March that they were working on hiring and training for the upcoming patio season, but unfortunately, the diner took on some exterior storm damage a few weeks later, pushing the patio opening to May 1st.
Despite the hail damage, Newton's was able to open up their patio a little earlier than initially planned. Customers were able to enjoy the beautiful weather as early as April 22nd. But, they had a new problem to deal with just a couple of days later.
On Friday, April 24th, Newtons announced on Facebook that their hood vent broke, which would prevent them from safely operating their kitchen over the weekend. Thanks to the power of social media, they were able to find someone to come out and fix it earlier than expected, allowing them to reopen. But, their problems didn't end there.
On May 17th, Newton's posted that they would have to close early that day due to staffing issues. Then, on the 28th, their cooler malfunctioned, destroying thousands of dollars worth of food and forcing them to close again. The post ended by saying:
"For those of you following along, 2026 is *really* trying to do us dirty, but we keep on fighting our way through thanks to the support and advice from y'all."
In the days that followed, Newton's had their cooler fixed, as well as the external restaurant signage that had been impacted by that early spring hail storm. But, disaster struck again on June 4th, when the exhaust hoods went down for the second time... and then a third time on June 12th. Newton's Paradise Cafe shared a lengthy update on Facebook a couple of days later, letting customers know their latest troubleshooting tactics and thanking them for their support during a difficult time. It reads, in part:
"Please understand that we are doing everything in our power to keep operations up and running, and through it all our goal is transparency with our guests and our wonderful staff. Every suggestion y'all have given us we have taken with humility, every thought and prayer we've received in to our hearts, and every time we have to take a step back, we push forward with y'all in mind.
We truly love what we do. Some days are just really hard, you know?"
Since June 14th, Newton's has been keeping customers updated regarding openings, closings, and temporary hours as they deal with the ongoing staffing and equipment issues. But, the latest update is that they are closed until further notice. I hope that they're able to resolve their issues, because I'd still really like to give them a try in the near future. The food looks amazing!
