Chrome Horse Saloon was a staple in the Newbo District. Many, including myself, were shocked when it shut down in 2024. The large building has sat empty, but that is about to change, as not one, but two new restaurants are planning to open soon!

Why Did Chrome Horse Saloon Close?

It's still a bit of a mystery to this day. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Chrome Horse announced in September 2024 that it would close their doors for good. The restaurant had served patrons for 21 years. They survived the flood, fire, and a pandemic. We enjoyed doing Listener Lunch at Chrome for many years, and the venue was known for its fun atmosphere and live music.

What Restaurants Will Take Over the Chrome Horse Building?

According to the Gazette, signage for two new restaurants has appeared on the windows of the building at 1201 Third Street SE. Those two restaurants are Oddmama's Vintage Cafe and Rhapsody.

Oddmama's Vintage Cafe will serve breakfast and lunch alongside merchandise from local artists and creators, according to the Gazette.

The restaurant on the other side of the building, called Rhapsody, will be a separate concept, in a partnership with the cafe's general manager and executive chef. The Gazette reports that the full-service restaurant is still under development, but will feature live music on the building's built-in stage.

When Will the New Restaurants Be Open?

The Gazette reports that Oddmama's Vintage Cafe plans to open later this fall, with Rhapsody planning on a Spring 2026 opening date.
