The end is finally in sight for motorists who use Highway 30 every day. The much anticipated Highway 30 bypass around Mount Vernon and Lisbon is finally set to open up on Friday.

The Highway 30 bypass around the two cities will officially be open to traffic by late afternoon on Friday, November 22nd. That is according to officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation. The scheduled opening is weather permitting. The bypass runs from west of Wilcox Road in Linn County to Charles Avenue in Cedar County. Construction on the new stretch of the four-lane highway began in 2017.

Some business owners and city leaders in Mt. Vernon have expressed some concerns about what affect the bypass might have on the number of potential customers that travel through the city. Some city leaders have viewed the Highway 1 interchange as a positive for the city.

The project cost more the $28 million to complete.
