Authorities have rescued an area boater who became lost while out fishing.

Shortly after 6am Sunday (Aug. 29), Linn County authorities, including the Sheriff's Office, Monroe Fire Department, Palo Fire Department, and Area Ambulance, were called out to the Chain Lakes Natural Area near Palo, from a man who stated that he was lost and could not find his way out of the area.

Kim "Ed" Yerkes of Cedar Rapids told dispatch that he went fishing Saturday morning on a small pontoon boat in the Chain Lakes area. Yerkes said he tried to find a different area to fish, and became disoriented, losing his way back.
He told authorities that he had been trying to find his way out of the Lakes area since Saturday.

After receiving the call from Yerkes' cell phone, the Linn County Dispatchers used his cellular signal to pinpoint his location, and send out rescue personnel to find him.

Deputies located Yerkes within an hour of his call to dispatch. Firefighters from Monroe and Palo helped in getting Yerkes and his boat out of the area.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, to be treated for a medical condition that was not associated with the incident.

(info from Radio Iowa):

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors decided against naming the county a Second Amendment sanctuary during its meeting this (Monday) morning.

A proposed resolution was brought to the board asking the county to reaffirm its commitment to constitutional rights, especially the second amendment. Board member Mark Reiser made a motion to support the measure but it died for lack of a second.

Board chair Larry Schellhammer said while he supports the second amendment, he felt the resolution would take the board into a political arena they don't want to go.

Supervisor Dan Byrnes said all elected officials swear to uphold the state and federal constitution when they take the oath of office and that alone is affirming support for individuals' constitutional rights.

Leaders in at least four Iowa counties -- Cedar, Hardin, Jasper, Madison -- have approved the Second Amendment sanctuary status.
