These Are the Dirtiest-Sounding Town Names in Iowa and the Midwest
Every state has some unusual town names, but some of them are a little weirder than others! Earthly Mission recently put together a map with some of the lewdest-sounding town names across America.
What's Iowa's Most Lewd-Sounding Town Name?
According to Earthly Mission, Iowa's most lewd-sounding name is not what I was expecting. I thought for SURE it would be Cumming, but it's actually Balltown!
Balltown, Iowa is known for one thing. No, not THOSE... get your mind out of the gutter! It's known as the home of Iowa's oldest restaurant, Breitbach's Country Dining. It was established back in 1852 and, despite being rebuilt after two fires, is still going strong today!
According to Wikipedia, the origin of the name Balltown isn't very exciting. The site reads:
"Balltown was named for John Ball, an early settler said to have lived on a Mississippi river island before 1850."
Does Iowa Have Any Other Dirty-Sounding Town Names?
Of course!
As I mentioned above, Cumming, Iowa is the first that comes to my mind when I think of inappropriate town names. Unfortunately (or maybe FORTUNATELY), we don't know the origin of that one. We just know that it was founded in 1888.
Another one that makes people giggle is Sac City. Sac City and the county it's located in, Sac County, are named after Native American tribes in the area. Wikipedia says:
"The town was so named because the Sac and Meskwaki peoples were in possession of the land at the time of the Louisiana Purchase."
One of the main draws of Sac City is the World's Largest Popcorn Ball, which was completed in 2016. It's more than eight-feet tall and weighs more than 9,370 pounds!
The last Iowa town I'll mention is Beaver, Iowa. Wikipedia says it was named for the nearby Beaver Creek, but that doesn't stop people from giggling...
What Are Some of the Other Lewd-Sounding Midwest Town Names?
- Illinois - Boody
- Indiana - Floyds Knobs
- Michigan - Dick
- Minnesota - Kiester
- Missouri - Cooter
- Nebraska - Beaver City
- Ohio - Pee Pee Township
- South Dakota - Bonesteel
- Wisconsin - Spread Eagle

Iowa's Weirdest Town Name
In addition to the most lewd-sounding town names in each state, Earthly Mission also listed the weirdest town names. Here in Iowa, the pick was What Cheer. I'll admit, I was very confused by that one when I first heard it. It sounds like you're asking, "WHAT cheer?" as if there's no joy to be found there.
According to Wikipedia, how What Cheer got its name is up for debate. What we do know, though, is that "the phrase 'what cheer with you' is an ancient English greeting dating back at least to the 15th century." So, the name is definitely not as depressing as my brain initially thought.
