The ‘Jurassic World’ Sequel Is Coming in 2018, With Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard
Sequels, like evolution, are inevitable. Like genetically-modified dinosaurs, they cannot be stopped. When Jurassic World becomes the third highest-grossing movie of all time (not this year, not this decade; ever) you could bet your dino DNA that Universal was going to make another one. And now it’s official: an as-yet untitled Jurassic World sequel is coming to theater on June 22, 2018.
The Pratt and Howard part is probably the newsiest element. Another Jurassic World was basically guaranteed as soon as the movie became a giant hit; Pratt and Howard’s involvement was not. Over the years, the Jurassic franchise has struggled to recycle beloved characters in less-beloved sequels. Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm returned in The Lost World; Sam Neill’s Alan Grant made his way back to the island in Jurassic Park III.
And that’s always the problem with these Jurassic sequels; these people aren’t dummies. Why on Earth would they ever agree to go back to this deathtrap? The excuses hatched up in the past were less than convincing. Then again, a lot of writers (i.e. this one) noted that the characters in Jurassic World were significantly less intelligent than their predecessors. Maybe that’s the excuse you need to get Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing back to Isla Nublar.
Jurassic World 2 will be written by Jurassic World screenwriters Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Don’t expect Trevorrow return to direct, though; he’s already expressed interest in doing other projects, and is currently rumored as the director of Star Wars: Episode IX. So let the speculation begin! And be quick about it; they’ve only got three years to crank this sucker out!
