There's become a bit of a trend lately when it comes to the 4th of July.

That trend is not celebrating the holiday on the holiday. Unfortunately, deciding to move the 4th festivities to the 5th cost Waterloo its chance to be at least somewhat timely due to nasty weather.

Likely to maximize the day for families and allow vendors and others time to set up. Unfortunately, Saturday was in large part a washout, and the event in downtown Waterloo was postponed.

In case you aren't aware, the City of Waterloo chose to have its Mayor’s Fireworks festivities on the Saturday after July 4, which was July 5.

Despite being titled as a fireworks show, the event was set to encompass a lot more, including live music at the lovely RiverLoop Amphitheatre & Expo Plaza in downtown.

Waterloo Faced criticism for Not Having the Event on July 4

As you might imagine, folks on social media were their typical cynical selves when Waterloo announced the annual Mayor’s Fireworks was going to be on July 5 this year and not the holiday itself.

Well, fast forward, the 4th was beautiful and the 5th of July was... not. At approximately 9:30 am on Saturday, we received a press release sent to this station saying the event was postponed.

Oh, yeah, on social media, the same folks critical of the date being July 5 in the first place returned to spike the football about the rainout.

To all the "boo birds" remember, the city doesn't have to give you a fireworks show and live music at all.

A New Date is Set for Fireworks in Waterloo

The new date for the Mayor's Fireworks will still include some great live music and, yes, again, weather permitting, a fireworks show.

The new date is set for this Friday, July 11.

Will you be able to go this Friday? Maybe it is a tad ironic that the 4th of July was a Friday, and the make-up date for a Saturday event is on a Friday... but sometimes life can be ironic.

As of this writing, Waterloo is still putting the finishing touches on the details, but if you would like to go, mark your calendar and plan to be downtown from 6-10 p.m. for the B2wins’ final Iowa show.

The night will be capped off with fireworks at about 9:30

Hopefully, Friday will be a nice day and the event will be a success!
