Have you ever stopped to think about which U.S. state has the tallest residents? I had not, until I was talking to a friend, who's 6'4" and has to duck when he walks through a door.

Now, he's not a native Iowan or Midwesterner; he's from Louisiana. But we were talking about his height being too much, I was lamenting being 5'9" is short.

People Look Up to Iowans

Iowa is part of a regional trend. It may surprise you to learn, Midwestern and Northern Plains states tend to have taller populations, likely due to genetics, nutrition, and demographics.

According to recent data from Data Panda, Iowa ranks among the tallest states in the nation. We're in a tie for 5th place for overall average height.

The study found Montana has the tallest people overall, with an average height of 5'7.7" averaged out between men and women.

Hawaii was the shortest, 5'6" is an average height. Florida was the only state not ranked.

Iowa Height: The Gender Breakdown

As mentioned, the average height in Iowa is 5'7.7".

Men are, as you might imagine, taller. Iowa is tied for 10th in height for men.

For women, we rank 7th, tied with Nebraska.
