If you're like me, you spend a lot of your free time in and around downtown Cedar Falls.

Aside from sporting one of the most charming downtowns in Iowa, in my opinion, it's also full of fantastic, local businesses to visit.

But if there were one gripe many patrons of downtown have, it would be parking. Or, better put, the complete lack of parking.

Yes, the parking in the area is free, but it can be hard to come by. However, it is about to get a little easier to park near Main Street.

Cedar Falls to Demolish the Former US Bank Building

In 2025, many of us, myself included, do most of our banking on our phone or computer. So it's not a shock that many banks in the U.S. are closing down physical branches.

One that closed in November last year was the US Bank location at 222 Washington St.

The bank has sat empty since it closed, but now the city of Cedar Falls has announced its plans for the space.

The plan is to turn the space into parking once the deed to the space is secured.

If the city can finalize a deal to get the deed, the building will be demolished, and much-needed additional parking will replace the former bank.

Ironically, despite keeping bank hours, US Bank was very picky about letting folks park in their lot when they weren't open...

Parking on or Near Main Street Remains a Challenge

When Cedar Falls Mayor Danny Laudick was running for office, he promised to tackle the issue of parking around Main St., and even addressed it in January in his State of the City address.

Assuming this plan to knock down the now-empty US Bank building on Washington St. comes to fruition, I would say he accomplished his goal.
