Eastern Iowa Woman Accidentally Shoots Herself at a Restaurant
Thankfully, everyone in this story is okay and the woman who was accidentally shot herself is dealing with non-life threatening injuries.
What would you even say after something like this happens? "Whoops, sorry." There's not much more you can say I suppose. The last time I checked, guns don't accidentally fire themselves. Someone pulls the trigger or a gun is being mishandled and the trigger latches onto something that fires the gun.
This woman, the people who work at the restaurant, and then restaurant employees are lucky that this didn't turn out much worse.
Accident
According to KCRG, a woman accidentally shot herself in the leg while she was out to eat. She was outside on the patio at the Blind Pig, located in Cedar Rapids, when a bullet struck her in her leg.
In the security footage The Blind Pig provided to police, the woman appears to be just arriving at the restaurant, she sets her jacket on the chair, and then you can see a waitress flinch, as this woman grabs her own leg. She seems to be shuffling her jacket and purse around when she's settling in. At first, no one really knew what happened. Megan Evans in the owner of the restaurant and she told KCRG
"At first, I thought it was kind of a joke. I watched the video and realized how serious it was and everybody was really scared."
In the state of Iowa, you are allowed to carry a weapon into a bar/restaurant, unless the bar has posted a sign prohibiting guns on the property. You also are not allowed to have your gun at a bar/restaurant if you are above the legal drinking limit. Megan spoke to KCRG about potentially banning guns at the Blind Pig to prevent something like this from happening.
She owns 2 other restaurants that prohibit bringing guns on the premises.
"I support everyone’s right to do as they choose. I need everybody to be safer for my wellbeing for my family, my friends, their family, and their friends."
If you possess a gun in public and are above the legal drinking limit, you could face a misdemeanor and go to jail for one year. Alcohol appears to not have played a factor in this accident, as the woman with the firearm had only just arrived at the restaurant.
I wonder if this woman potentially forgot to double check if her safety was on when she left the house? Even with a gun potentially fumbling around in a purse, it seems unlikely that a safety would be bumped off AND the trigger hit something that shot the gun.
