2 Most Important Things Needed For Hornet Season In Illinois
As the scorching Illinois summer fades, you'll need two crucial items to survive hornet attacks around your home. It wouldn't hurt to also bring a level of fearlessness you never knew existed. Trust me, when the hornets start swarming, you'll wish you had both of these things in hand.
When Hornets Attack
Oh, joy! Nothing says "welcome home" like discovering an army of hornet nests strategically placed around your house like they're planning a military coup. Who wouldn't want their very own buzzing security detail?
They've covered the area around my shed door so well that I can't get to my mower.
One nest, you say? How quaint. Try five, no, six! Each is teeming with winged nightmares ready to defend their fortress against anyone's feeble attempts to reclaim their territory.
My 2-item suggestion, while not coming from a professional insect handler, has kept me sting-free my entire life.
You can grab a can of ordinary hornet spray, but you'll soon realize it’s as useless as a water pistol in a wildfire. Every squirt feels like you're just giving them a refreshing shower.
Now look at what your wet wake-up call did, they’ve sent out the welcome committee to say hello up close!
That kind of thing has sent me retreating into my home contemplating life choices, googling “Can you just burn the house down?” Spoiler: That’s frowned upon.
I found a method that has worked for me to this point and unless you have a huge nest in the bushes or ground or under your entire roofline, it could work for you too.
(PLEASE call a professional if you have issues as I mentioned above)

As soon as I saw the label on the can, I knew I stood a chance against them. You CANNOT come to this hornet battle with a weak-streamed spray. YOU WILL DIE!
Getting to stand nearly 30 feet away from your target gives you a fighting chance at survival. And the thickness of the foam you just shot at them will immediately stop them in their tracks.
DO NOT come to the battle without several of these cans. At some point, your fear will manifest itself as bad aim and you'll need to 'reload'.

The other essential tool in this 'stick and move' fight is the right pair of shoes. Don't be bringing Jimmy Buffet-inspired footwear to this fight. You're asking to get stung a hundred times if you do that. You'll surely fall trying to run.
That's the other important reality of fighting with hornets. You've just killed many, but you never kill them all, at least not right away.
It's best to hit them with a couple of cans of spray then run and take a seat somewhere safe. After a few minutes, go back to survey your kill. You may have to do this a few times, so wear some good running shoes.
