It's almost time to send our kiddos back to school!

One sure signal that the summer is drawing to a close is tax-free weekend. It's when a lot of us get back-to-school clothes and supplies for our kids and it's a good time in general to do some shopping.

It's also an opportunity for some fall brides to save money too.

Iowa's tax-free weekend is this weekend, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 2nd- midnight on Saturday, August 3rd. Sunday, August 4th isn't included in the tax-free weekend.

What's Taxable & What's Exempt

Iowa has a handy-dandy list of what's going to be taxed and what's not, but tax-exempt items include:

  • Underclothes (socks, bras, underwear)
  • Sneakers
  • Coats/jackets
  • Jeans
  • Shirts
  • Pajamas
  • Work & school uniforms
  • Bridal apparel

Basically, clothing & shoes that are under $100 will be tax-free this weekend. And yes, that includes online orders (that meet the requirements) too.

The tax-free exemption does not apply to backpacks, watches, jewelry, or things that are over $100.

When it comes to back-to-school shopping, experts predict that most of a family's spending will be on clothes, followed by electronics, then school supplies. Experts say you should set and stick to a budget, compare prices before you go out, and remember that stores will be busy this weekend for the holiday. And in Iowa's case: remember that the tax-free weekend does not include Sunday.

The Iowa Legislature first approved the tax-free weekend in 2000, waiving the normal 6-7% sales tax.
