Shrimp with Radioactive Contamination Recalled in Iowa, Illinois
Another radioactive shrimp recall is in effect, per the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, as if we didn't have enough concerns over the holiday season.
The FDA announced this week that more than 83,000 bags of frozen raw shrimp are being recalled across 17 states, including Iowa and Illinois. Once more, thousands of additional bags of shrimp might have been contaminated with cesium-137, a man-made radioisotope.

Details About the Recall:
Direct Source Seafood LLC of Bellevue, Washington said the impacted bags of frozen raw shrimp were imported from Indonesia. The product may have been "prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions," which could have led to it coming in contact with cesium-137, per WHO 13.
The states in which the shrimp were sold are:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Massachusetts
- Montana
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
- New York
- North Dakota
- Pennsylvania
- Oregon
- Utah
- Vermont
- Wyoming

The Recalled Products:
The FDA stated the recalled shrimp was sold under the "Market 32" and "Waterfront Bistro" brands at a plethora of retailers. Here is a look at the information for the affected products:

Eating or inhaling small amounts of cesium-137 can drastically increase the risk of cancer. The FDA is presently investigating the Indonesian facility in which the shrimp was processed, which is PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods), per WHO 13.
The FDA did offer some reassurance in October, saying no products contaminated with cesium-137 has "entered the U.S. marketplace." Direct Source Seafood, LLC also added that no illnesses have been reported at this time either. Customers with questions can also contact Direct Source Seafood during normal business hours at 1-425-455-2291.
