Each day thousands of people make their way across the Iowa State Fair where they are able to get a glimpse into our state’s agricultural environment. As people make their way through the Cattle Barn, they are greeted with the opportunity to milk a cow the old fashion way.

A bucket and a stool.

One face you may run into when wondering about the barn is Abigail Rogers of the Dairy Science Club at Iowa State University.

Most of the people that come through our line have no dairy experience. A lot of them think that chocolate milk is what comes out of a cow so it's really exciting to see all the curiosity and answer all those questions.

We are in Iowa, a state known for agriculture and that's still something that we deal with is having to educate people about where their milk comes from.

This activity is one of the many ways fairgoers get to dip their toes into the world of agriculture.

It also is the Dairy Science Club’s way to raise money for their yearly activities. Rogers explains they use the funds they raise over the 11-day fair to go towards industry tours, scholarships, and club socials/meetings- an event that helps educate and immerse club members into the dairy industry.
