My dad has been an avid fisherman for decades and I've spent a lot of time with him, though admittedly not enough, taking part in his favorite sport.  Ponds, rivers, backwaters, small pools of water (ok, not really), he's fished them all.

This weekend, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Weekend gives you an opportunity to cast your line, without a license.  It may be the Free Fishing Weekend (June 6-8), but all other regulations still apply.  So grab a pole, some bait, a tackle box, I recommend a bucket to sit on, and get out their and give it a cast.  Then Monday, impress your friends with all the fish you caught, and their enormous size.  After all, every fishermen stretches the truth a little so there's no reason a newbie can't.

And if the kids catch their first fish this weekend, they can even get the DNR's first fish award, complete with a certificate and the photo you submit.  All the details on that are here.

I hope you enjoy getting outside this weekend, during one of the most beautiful times of the year.
