Is April the Giraffe’s Pregnancy One Giant April Fools’ Day Joke?
Some people are starting to think so...
Is it cynical to think that everyone on the internet is lying to me? Maybe. But you have to admit, this whole story is starting to feel a little fishy.
In case you haven't seen the video, there's a giraffe by the name of April at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York that is apparently very pregnant. I've been following the story because giraffes are my most favorite animal EVER. Since February, the zoo has been doing a live stream so viewers can witness the birth of her baby. Unfortunately, it's taking a lot longer than we all thought... or IS it?
After doing a little research on the internet, I think I agree with the other folks who think this whole April the Giraffe thing could be a very well-thought-out and elaborate April Fools' Day joke. Hear me out: First of all, the giraffe's name is APRIL. Coincidence? Maybe. But also, they've been saying that she could give birth at ANY time for over a month now. What if the zoo put this whole plan together as a giant viral publicity stunt? Stranger things have happened. If this REALLY is one big joke, I think it may go down in history as the most well-planned hoax of all time.
The only things preventing me from putting all my faith in the April Fools' Day theory is the fact that there's a GoFundMe page that has raised a whole lot of money for the giraffe family, and also that Toys R Us has gotten on board and become a sponsor. Not to mention that the average gestation period for a giraffe is 13-15 months, which means there's a two month waiting period. Plus the zoo just posted a pretty intense photo of the mammary development...
Mashable reported yesterday that a spokesman for the zoo made sure to dispel all of the April Fools' Day rumors, saying, "April is definitely pregnant," and, "she's going to give birth anytime here very soon."
If it is one big joke, I guess we will find out tomorrow. If not, I sincerely hope the baby is somehow born tomorrow and they name it "Fool." It would be April's Fool! How cute is that?
