We've seen many examples over the past month of Iowans helping their neighbors in their time of need after the devastating derecho. Now, a pair of musicians with Iowa roots who have since moved elsewhere are showing that "Iowa Nice" remains with you even when you've left Iowa.

Ed Bornstein, now of Chicago, and Andrew Cahak, currently residing in Minneapolis are friends who met in the early 2000s and are putting together a "mixtape" to help raise funds for derecho victims in their hometown and surrounding area. They are both from Cedar Rapids and figured this was the best way for them to help where they could.

They have started work to put together the compilation, which will be available for download for a donation of any amount starting on October 2. It will only be available until November 6 and all proceeds will go to derecho victims.

If you're a musician (from Iowa or anywhere in the country) who would like to submit a track for the compilation, send your work to moneytapeslabel@gmail.com through September 25.

Your donation to purchase the "New Roots Grow" project can be made be in any amount and proceeds will be collected for two organizations: Trees Forever, which is working to rebuild the area’s damaged tree canopy, and the Intercultural Center of Iowa, which is helping members of Cedar Rapids' refugee population get back on their feet.

Once it's available to purchase and download, you'll find it on the Bandcamp website
